More about the Talks + Workshops
Nuts about Nuts on Vancouver Island.
A double bill lead by Nanoose grower Al Chomica at 12pm in the Seniors Activity Hall. The talk will showcase almonds, hazels, pine nuts and walnuts and will cover some growing tips and challenges on all four of those species. The second workshop, after a short break, covers a range of delicious ways to use these four nuts more easily and functionally in your kitchen.
Chomica Al is a passionate gardener, soilsmith, and enthusiastic experimenter. He is a life-long student of nature and plants, and digs deep to research, document, learn and share. An avid gardening writer and contributor to many online garden communities, Al is happy to share his knowledge so that others can excel at growing their own food.
Mobile Seed Thresher and Cleaner from FarmFolk CityFolk
We are so excited to host this wonderful organization and their mobile seed cleaning equipment at the Apple and Nut Fest this year. The cleaner will be set up outside all day at the Activity Centre and offer demonstrations and talks at 10:30am and 1:30pm that day. The trailer is also open to all who wish to thresh or clean their seed this year! Bring down your oats, your beans, your grains, your quinoa, or your flax - you name it...to be threshed and cleaned by this wonderful service.
Farm Folk City Folk have cleaned over 140,000 pounds and hundreds of seed varieties as a part of their mission to support BC farmers and increase the availability of provincially and ecologically grown seed. The program started with one trailer in 2018, and has since expanded to four mobile seed cleaning trailers which go on tour every year from the northern parts of the province to the Gulf Islands, responding to demand for on-farm seed cleaning capabilities.
Can you Volunteer?
We're looking for a couple of helpers with each of the following roles at our event:
-
set up market canopies and plants outside and support our plant sale
-
help take down tables and help tidy up at the end of the day 3pm - the clean up always goes quickly but more hands makes light work
-
help in the Apple Cafe for a morning shift and an afternoon shift
Please email us at islandagriculture@gmail.com if you are interested in helping out!
